There’s plenty to think about before a trip. Medicare probably isn’t the most exciting item on the list, but spending a few minutes on it before you leave can save you from trying to figure it out when you’re sick or hurt and hundreds of miles from home.

If you have Original Medicare, you can generally get Medicare-covered care from any doctor or hospital in the United States that takes Medicare.

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, things can work differently. Plans may have provider networks and service areas, so routine care away from home may not work the same way it does at home. Emergency care, urgent care and certain out-of-area dialysis situations have special protections. If you’re planning to see a doctor, schedule a procedure or receive other non-emergency care during your trip, check your coverage before making the appointment. Depending on your plan, care outside the network may cost more or may not be covered at all.

If you take regular medications and are concerned about prescription refills during an extended trip, ask your drug plan (Part D) whether a two or three month supply is available for the medicines you take regularly. And If you use an extra benefit offered through your coverage—such as a fitness or over the counter benefit—please check with your plan by calling the Member Services number on your card, before assuming you can use your benefits at your travel destination.
